How to Get Solar Panels Installed in Malaysia: Step by Step
Going solar in Malaysia follows a fairly standard sequence regardless of which installer you choose. Knowing the steps up front makes it much easier to tell a smooth installer from one that’s cutting corners.
Step 1: Check your usage and get quotes
Pull your last 6–12 months of TNB bills to understand your average monthly usage in kWh — this is what any installer should size a system against. At this stage, confirm the installer is SEDA-registered — this isn’t optional paperwork, it’s what determines whether the install can legally connect to the grid.
Step 2: Site assessment
A proper installer visits your property (or does a thorough remote assessment with satellite imagery and your own photos) to check:
- Roof orientation and tilt — south-and-west-facing roofs generally get better output in Malaysia given the sun’s path.
- Shading throughout the day, not just at one moment — trees, neighbouring buildings, or water tanks that cast shade at certain hours.
- Roof material and structural condition — whether it can support the racking without reinforcement.
- Available space for the inverter and, if applicable, a battery.
A quote given without any of this — just a system size and a price — is a rough estimate, not a real proposal.
Step 3: Design and proposal
The installer finalises a system design: panel count and layout, inverter choice (see our equipment guide if you want to understand string vs. microinverter setups), and projected output based on your roof’s actual conditions. This is also where a battery gets discussed if you’re considering one.
Step 4: NEM application
If you’re exporting surplus power under Net Energy Metering, the installer typically handles the TNB application and the swap to a bidirectional meter. This step has processing time on TNB’s side that’s outside the installer’s control — ask upfront what timeline they’re seeing currently.
Step 5: Installation
Physical installation for a typical residential system usually takes 1–3 days, depending on system size and roof complexity. This covers mounting the racking, laying panels, running cabling, and installing the inverter.
Step 6: Inspection and commissioning
Before the system goes live, it needs to pass inspection — confirming the install meets safety standards and matches the registered design. Once approved and the meter swap (if applicable) is complete, the installer commissions the system and walks you through the monitoring app or dashboard.
Step 7: Monitoring and aftercare
From here it’s mostly passive — check your monitoring dashboard periodically for unexpected drops in output, and ask your installer what their warranty and maintenance support actually covers (some bundle a set number of years of free checkups, others don’t).
How long does the whole process take?
From first quote to a live system, 4–10 weeks is a reasonable range for a straightforward residential install — most of that is scheduling and the NEM application, not the physical work itself. Commercial or larger systems, or properties needing structural work first, can take longer.
