Solar Panel Equipment Guide: Panels, Inverters, and Batteries Explained

A solar installation is really three separate pieces of equipment working together: the panels that generate power, the inverter that converts it into usable electricity, and — optionally — a battery that stores it. Understanding what each one actually does makes installer quotes much easier to compare, since two quotes with the same “kWp” number can still differ a lot depending on what’s behind that number.

Solar panels

Panels are rated by their peak output in watts (a “550W panel” generates up to 550 watts under ideal test conditions). A handful of things separate a good panel choice from a mediocre one:

  • Efficiency — how much of the sunlight hitting the panel actually converts to electricity. Higher efficiency means more output from the same roof area, which matters most when roof space is limited.
  • Temperature coefficient — how much output drops as the panel heats up. Malaysia’s climate means panels run hot most of the year, so this number matters more here than in cooler markets.
  • Warranty structure — most reputable panels carry a product warranty (defects) separate from a performance warranty (guaranteed output over 20–25 years). Check both, not just the headline number.

Inverters

The inverter converts the DC electricity panels produce into the AC electricity your home actually uses. Two main types show up in residential quotes:

  • String inverters — one inverter handles a whole “string” of panels in series. Cheaper, simpler, and fine for a roof with one clean, unshaded plane.
  • Microinverters / power optimizers — each panel (or small group) gets its own conversion hardware. More expensive, but the system handles partial shading and multiple roof orientations much better, since one shaded panel doesn’t drag down the whole string’s output.

If your roof has a single unobstructed face pointing in one direction, a string inverter is usually the sensible, cheaper choice. If you’ve got multiple roof planes, chimneys, or partial shading at different times of day, ask specifically about microinverters or optimizers — a quote that doesn’t address this for a complex roof is worth questioning.

Batteries

A battery isn’t part of every solar install — plenty of systems run “grid-tied” without one, exporting surplus under NEM instead of storing it. Where a battery earns its cost is usually tied to TNB’s Time-of-Use tariff: storing midday solar surplus to use during the evening peak-price window, instead of exporting it at the lower NEM rate and then buying grid power back at peak rate a few hours later.

Maintenance, briefly

Grid-tied residential solar systems in Malaysia are largely low-maintenance — no moving parts in the panels themselves. The main upkeep items:

  • Periodic cleaning — dust and bird droppings reduce output; how often you need to clean depends on your local environment (proximity to construction, trees, agriculture).
  • Inverter lifespan — inverters typically have a shorter working life than panels (often 10–15 years vs. 20–25 for panels), so budget for a possible inverter replacement partway through the system’s life.
  • Monitoring — most modern inverters come with an app or dashboard; a sudden unexplained drop in output is usually the first sign something needs a technician’s attention.

Comparing quotes on equipment, not just price

When two installer quotes differ in price for a similar system size, the equipment spec sheet is usually where the difference lives — panel brand and warranty, inverter type, and whether a battery is included. Ask every installer for the specific panel and inverter model in writing, not just a brand name, so you can compare like for like.
