The cost of installing solar panels in Malaysia comes down to one number first: system size in kWp (kilowatt-peak). Everything else — panel brand, inverter type, roof condition, installer margin — moves the price around that baseline, but size is what determines the range you’re budgeting in.

These are self-consumption installations sized against a household’s own electricity bill — not the larger export-focused systems commercial NEM participants sometimes install. Treat the ranges as a starting point for a conversation with an installer, not a quote.

What actually moves the price

Panel and inverter brand. Tier-1 panels (the ones with a long, verifiable manufacturing track record) cost more upfront but tend to carry better performance warranties. Inverter choice — string inverter vs. microinverters/power optimizers — affects both price and how the system handles roof shading.

Roof type and condition. Metal roofing is generally faster and cheaper to mount on than tiled roofs, which often need additional flashing work to avoid leaks. A roof that needs structural reinforcement before panels go up adds cost outside the “solar” line item entirely.

Racking and mounting complexity. A single unobstructed roof plane is the cheapest case. Multiple roof faces, dormers, or obstructions (water tanks, aircon condensers) mean more racking hardware and more labour.

Scaffolding and access. A single-storey bungalow with ground-level roof access costs less to work on than a shophouse with restricted rear access needing scaffolding.

Where you are. Klang Valley has the deepest pool of installers, which tends to keep quotes competitive. In East Malaysia or more remote peninsular areas, mobilisation cost for the crew can add a noticeable premium.

Budgeting for a residential install

A simple way to size a system to your bill: check your average monthly electricity usage in kWh from a recent TNB bill, and aim for a system that generates roughly that much over a full month of Malaysian sun hours. Most residential systems in Malaysia are sized to offset 60–90% of the household’s own usage rather than to maximise export — export payback under NEM is at grid tariff rates, which is far less attractive than avoiding a self-used kWh entirely at the retail rate you’d otherwise pay.

Financing is common — several installers offer hire-purchase or lease arrangements that spread the cost over 3–7 years, often landing close to or below the household’s existing TNB bill from month one.

Getting an accurate quote
